Cheering Servite on Friday in its Pac-5 Division first-round game against Lakewood at Cerritos College was Edison junior Luke Gane (pictured on far right with father Jim, center, and Servite Coach Troy Thomas), who was diagnosed with the blood disorder aplastic anemia over the summer.

Gane has adopted the Friars as his favorite team in the postseason after they showed up en masse to a fundraiser event at a hair salon shortly after his diagnosis. Servite Coach Troy Thomas was among those who got their already-short-locks buzzed to help raise money for Gane.

Gane underwent a bone-marrow transplant and hopes to play again next season. He is still recovering at home but has received a doctor’s permission to attend three games this year. He must wear a mask and watch from behind the end zone because he remains susceptible to bacterial infection.
