The best pass I’ve seen all season was just thrown by Lakewood quarterback Jesse Scroggins.

The junior quarterback connected on a beautiful, 48-yard touchdown pass that receiver Kevin Anderson caught in the end zone to give Lakewood a 14-0 halftime lead. The bomb of a pass was right on target and the way Anderson managed to sprint away from the Mission Viejo defender and make the over-shoulder catch was just spectacular.

It’s rare to see a high school quarterback throw a pass that far and that dead on.

Mission Viejo’s offense has hit the wall in the second half, and a lot of that has to do with the pressure the Lancers are putting on quarterback Allan Bridgford, who hasn’t completed a pass over 12 yards. Of course, his receivers haven’t helped his cause -- they’ve dropped three catchable passes.

Unfortunately, the Diablos’ best drive of the night toward the end of the second quarter hit the wall when Lakewood safety Brennan Kelly intercepted a Bridgford pass on the Lancers’ 5-yard line.

Halftime stats:

Lakewood

QB Jesse Scroggins -- 5-8-107, 1 TD

RB Jerry Stone --9-59, 1 TD

Mission Viejo

QB Alan Bridgford -- 10-22-89, 1 INT

RB Jake Marshall -- 13-68
