Notre Dame quarterback Ryan Kasdorf has been named the Gatorade California football player of the year. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound junior was one of the revelations of the year, leading the Knights to the Serra League title before they lost to Orange Lutheran in last week’s Pac-5 Division quarterfinals.

Kasdorf passed for 3,291 yards and 36 touchdowns, completing 69% of his pass attempts along the way. He averaged 274 passing yards per game and set a team record for most passing yards in a season and a game.

He also has an impressive 3.75 grade-point average and has volunteered for fundraisers and service missions through his church and school.

With the honor, Kasdorf becomes a finalist for the 2008-09 Gatorade national football player of the year award, which will be announced later this month.

Southern California players have won the honor for five consecutive years. Mater Dei quarterback Matt Barkley won in 2007 before being named the 2007-08 Gatorade male athlete of the year last July. Other previous winners include Oaks Christian’s Marc Tyler (2006), Norco’s Toby Gerhart (2005) and Mission Viejo’s Mark Sanchez (2005).
