A couple of odd plays, but no scoring in the second quarter, as unbeaten Rancho Cucamonga (12-0-1) takes a 14-7 lead into halftime over their Baseline League rival Upland in the Central Division championship game.

The quarter started when Rancho Cucamonga quarterback Greg Watson tracked a bad high snap over his head, 19 yards back to the 30-yard line with Upland defenders closing in. The speedy Watson evaded the pursuers, however, and ran to the Cougars’ 49.

Upland caught a break less than midway through the quarter when Rancho Cucamonga intercepted Josh Nunes for the second time, but linebacker Kiki Kauvaka fumbled at the Highlanders’ 30. Nunes recovered the fumble and returned the ball 17 yards.

But Nunes completed only five of his first 13 passes, missing low on a pass before the interception and missing deep to clinch a punt.

At the half, Nunes has completed seven of 17 passes for 86 yards, with two passes picked off. The Highlanders penetrated as far as Rancho’s 37 in the quarter and Rancho never made it past midfield.
