The most stunning statistic about unbeaten Long Beach Poly (14-0) is that in its four Pac-5 Division playoff games, the Jackrabbits scored a total of one touchdown and two field goals in the first half. And won.

This is the strangest Poly team in years. Poly teams are supposed to dominate schools. This team loves to come from behind and make its coach and fans sweat.

‘I sure do love this group,’ Poly Coach Raul Lara said. ‘They do not give up.’

Lara said his team’s opponents have done a good job in the first half of finding ways to stop the Jackrabbits. But Poly’s coaches have been able to make adjustments in the second half to counter the strategies.

Poly has one game left, a Saturday night encounter with unbeaten Sacramento Grant in the CIF state football championship open division bowl game at the Home Depot Center.

Poly has yet to play its best game of the postseason. Maybe Saturday will be the moment.
