Boys’ basketball: Mater Dei on ESPNU at 2 p.m.

Thanks to its 81-72 victory over Marrieta (Ga.) Wheeler on Monday, Mater Dei will attempt to keep its undefeated season intact this afternoon when it takes on Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick in the championship game of the City of Palms Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.

Tyler Lamb had 18 points and 13 rebounds in the triumph over Wheeler and David Wear, pictured, added 17 points and nine rebounds as the Monarchs, ranked No. 1 in the Southland by The Times and No. 1 in the nation by USA Today, improved to 8-0. If the Monarchs beat a very talented St. Patrick squad, they’ll capture their second City of Palms Classic title in three years -- nice.

Westchester (13-1), the only other local team in the tournament, is scheduled to play Brooklyn (N.Y.) Lincoln at 9:20 a.m. The Comets beat Raleigh (N.C) Word of God Christian Academy, 76-57, on Monday thanks, in part, to a 26-point effort by Jordin Mayes.
