There already are predictions of Oaks Christian meeting De La Salle in the CIF state open division bowl game next season, but everybody had better take a deep breath and not forget about Los Angeles Crenshaw.

Yes, the City Section rarely gets respect, but Birmingham almost made it to a bowl game two years ago with a 13-1 record, and Crenshaw has a strong nonleague schedule lined up in 2009, with games against Lakewood, Norco, Fontana Miller and Culver City.

If the Cougars are able to win out, I don’t see how they could be denied a berth, and they have a shot, with lots of talent and speed back from a team that was probably the best in the City in 2008.

As for Oaks Christian, the Lions open with Alemany, and Alemany Coach Dean Herrington has several months to prepare for the Lions.

‘I can’t wait to play them,’ Herrington said.

It’s about time a coach looked forward to playing Oaks Christian instead of making excuses of about being outmanned.
