Boys’ basketball: Victory all but assured for Mater Dei

Fans are already filing out of the Meruelo Athletic Center with Mater Dei holding a 54-35 lead over Newark (N.J.) St. Benedict’s Prep heading into the fourth quarter.

If the Monarchs hold on, they will retain the top spot in the USA Today national rankings. No. 2 St. Benedict’s could be in for a steep drop with what would be its second consecutive defeat after 19 consecutive victories to open the season.
