Huntington Beach Edison Coach Steve Lambright has been raving about the potential of sophomore pitcher Henry Owens, and Owens made Lambright look good on Saturday, striking out 14 and taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning of an 8-1 victory over El Modena. He allowed one hit.

No. 3-ranked Capistrano Valley has started the season with consecutive shutouts, the same as top-ranked Mater Dei. And No. 2 El Toro had a shutout in its opener and outlasted Marina, 6-2, in nine innings Saturday.

Let’s just say that there’s an abundance of strong pitchers in Orange County this season.

Another impressive pitching performance this weekend was turned in by Crespi junior Ryon Healy, who struck out 13 and retired 16 consecutive batters on Friday in a shutout of Palmdale.
