Simi Valley enjoyed some more one-run fun this afternoon, edging host Newbury Park for a 4-3 victory that was the Pioneers’ third one-run triumph in its last four games.

‘We’ve been in a one-run game with everyone,’ Simi Valley Coach Matt La Belle said. ‘Any of our games could go either way.’

This one threatened to go Newbury Park’s way in the sixth when the Panthers mounted a two-on, one-out threat. But Pioneers closer Jonathan Meyer retired the next two batters to escape the jam and pitched a one-two-three seventh to record his third save.

Nick Vigo had two hits and drove in two runs for Simi Valley (9-3 overall, 5-0 Marmonte League), ranked No. 16 in the Southland by The Times. Meyer doubled and drove in a run during the Pioneers’ three-run first inning.

Jordan Brower tripled and had a run-scoring sacrifice for No. 19 Newbury Park (8-4, 2-3)

After a rocky first inning in which he allowed two runs, Simi Valley starter Drew Sandler (1-1) allowed only one more run before departing after the fifth inning and moving behind the plate to catch Meyer.

Simi Valley plays No. 10 El Segundo on Thursday afternoon. Could be another one-run game.
