Facing a must-win situation in the Trinity League, Orange Lutheran turned to junior right-hander Andrew Thurman on Wednesday, and he came through with his best performance of the season. Thurman gave up no hits to Santa Margarita in 5 2/3 innings in the Lancers’ 8-1 victory.

Thurman (3-3), who has committed to UC Irvine, struck out seven and walked four. He ended up allowing two hits before coming out with two outs in the sixth. He started the game with four consecutive strikeouts and twice struck out Trayce Thompson looking on curveballs during the game.

‘It was a great way to start the game,’ Thurman said. ‘I felt total confidence.’

Santa Margarita (7-4, 3-1), ranked No. 9 by The Times, made three errors and didn’t play particularly well. Orange Lutheran (8-3, 2-2) got RBI singles from Josh Doyle and Cody Nulph.

Orange Lutheran needed the victory because it’s scheduled to play league favorite Santa Ana Mater Dei on Saturday.
