Michael Avery, the 6-foot-5 freshman guard from Encino Crespi who committed to Kentucky as an eighth-grader, has decided to reopen his college recruiting after the Wildcats hired John Calipari as their new coach.

Avery’s father, Howard, said Thursday the decision was made to give Calipari the freedom to do his own evaluation, though the elder Avery said he has not spoken with Calipari.

‘We love Kentucky. We love the school,’ Howard said.

But he said Calipari deserves the chance to make his own judgment on players.
