It won’t attract the large crowd of a Garfield-Roosevelt football game, but Wednesday’s Eastern League baseball game between rivals Garfield and Roosevelt at L.A. Roybal High should produce a high level of intensity because it’s for first place in the Eastern League.

Garfield (13-8, 9-3) holds down first place ahead of Roosevelt (22-4, 8-4). Garfield came away on Saturday with a 5-2 nonleague victory over Southern Section power Los Alamitos behind senior pitchers Gabriel Rios and Erik Monroy.

Garfield first must get past South East in a league game today. Second baseman Jose Maya has been Garfield’s top hitter.
