Gardena Serra’s Turquoise Thompson was heading toward what looked like an easy victory in the girls’ 300-meter hurdles when she tripped on the second-to-last hurdle and went tumbling to the track, triggering a shocked reaction from the crowd at Cerritos College.

Thompson remained prone on the track for a few seconds before getting up and running to the finish in 59.20 seconds. She will not advance to the state meet in an event in which she was the favorite.
