The Southern California basketball community is out en force for this week’s Best of the Summer event that’s being held at Loyola Marymount, Cal State Dominguez Hills and The HAX in Hawthorne.

Top high school seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen are competing all week against their counterparts from around the country. The team that’s most intriguing for me is the Double Pump 2011 Elite squad. They play today at 12:45 p.m. at The HAX.

These are some of the best juniors in the Southland. Long Beach Poly is well represented with 6-foot-7 Ryan Anderson and guards Alex Carmon and Alexis Moore. Valencia’s Lonnie Jackson and Taft’s Spencer Dinwiddie are on the team. Simi Valley’s Christian Aurand is coaching the team.

I ran into Dave Benezra, who runs Los Angeles Rockfish, and he gave me three sophomores to watch: guard Justin Childress from Los Angeles Loyola, guard Steve Jones from Mission Hills Alemany and 6-6 Kyle Ingram from Orange El Modena. He said all three can be college prospects.
