They held a showdown for the mythical national title today at Blair Field in the Area Code Games, and neither local team made it. The Cincinnati Reds and Oakland Athletics played for the championship, with the local Milwaukee Brewers Blue and Gray teams having to watch just like everybody else.
That’s not to say the Brewers didn’t have their moments. The Blue team went 2-1-1 through its first four games and featured dazzling performances from Torrance outfielder Angelo Gumbs, Tustin third baseman Travis Harrison and St. Paul pitcher Gabriel Encinas. Los Osos catcher Jake Hernandez hit a run-scoring triple Sunday to help the Blue pull out a 5-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox.
The Gray also had several standouts, including Chaminade pitcher Brando Tessar and Mater Dei outfielder Cory Hahn. The Gray finished the tournament 2-3 after dropping a 1-0 decision against Cincinnati on Sunday.
