The Venice Boys & Girls Club Urban Youth Academy RBI program won both the senior and junior divisions of the RBI World Series on Sunday in Miami.
Kerry Kelly pitched a comlete game to lead Venice’s senior team to a 9-3 victory over Detroit. Kelly, selected his team’s most valuable player, allowed two runs and struck out six. Pascual Garcia had two hits and scored two runs and Dominique Starks had two hits and drove in two runs.
Center fielder J.P. Crawford drove in three runs with a fourth-inning triple to lift the Venice junior team to a 10-3 triumph over Santo Domingo. Crawford, awarded game MVP honors, reached base in each of his four plate appearances. Third baseman Darrell Miller drove in a run and pitcher Chase De Jong allowed two runs in 4 2/3 innings while striking out eight hitters.
Both Venice teams are based out of the Major League Baseball Urban Youth Academy in Compton, which opened in 2006.
