For the first time since they practiced on a dirt parking lot in the 1950s, Mary Star of the Sea football players will be able to complete drills on campus when practice starts Aug. 17.

Mary Star opened a new campus in 2007, but the practice field was not ready until now; the Mary Star Athletic Booster Club spent more than a year getting the field in shape.

‘As a player in the 70s, I never envisioned a new campus, let alone a practice field on campus,’ Coach Dino Andrie, a 1979 graduate of Mary Star, said in a statement. ‘The new practice field will give our student-athletes a sense of pride of having something that’s theirs.’

The Stars had lived a nomadic existence after the dirt parking lot they used as a practice facility was paved in the 1950s and converted into a parking lot; their practice fields have included Peck Park, Daniels Field, Harbor Park and Fromhold Field. No longer.

Mary Star plays host to Bishop Montgomery on Sept. 4 at Daniels Field in its season opener.
