The most inspirational story of the week might be playing out at Huntington Beach Edison, where senior right tackle and defensive end Luke Gane is preparing to return to the field after sitting out all of last season.

Gane suffers from aplastic anemia, a disorder in which bone marrow does not produce sufficient new cells to replenish red blood cells. He only discovered something was wrong with him after he began experiencing a bloody nose, and it’s a good thing he did--had he continued to practice, the impact of a hit could have killed him, he said.

Now having sufficiently recovered with the help of a bone marrow transplant, Gane is back for the Chargers, who open their season Friday against Artesia at Huntington Beach High. It should be a spine-tingling moment when he runs back onto the field.

‘We are so excited that he is still here with us, not to mention stepping on the field,’ his mother, Tomoko Gane, wrote in an e-mail to The Times.
