Orange Lutheran’s 28-14 loss to Pickerington (Ohio) Central on Sunday in Columbus, Ohio, wasn’t as lopsided as the numbers might have made it seem.

The Lancers were outgained in total yardage, 406-184, but there was another factor that loomed even larger.

‘We had two turnovers andd they were both huge,’ Lutheran Coach Jim Kunau said by phone this morning.

The first came in the first half with the score tied. The Lancers fumbled a kickoff deep in their own territory and Pickerington scored to take the lead. Then, with Lutheran trying to stage a comeback in the fourth quarter, a trick play went awry when a receiver had a pass intercepted.

The Lancers are still in Ohio today. They went to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton and were scheduled to tour Ohio State’s athletic facilities.

Lutheran doesn’t play again until it faces Tustin on Sept. 18.

‘We’re going to try to make it benefit us because we have a lot of work to do to try and improve before we play again,’ Kunau said. ‘Hopefully it will work out to our benefit.’
