After nearly upsetting Matt Barkley and the rest of the Monarchs on ESPN2 in last year’s season opener, Carson relied on a trio of big plays to defeat Mater Dei, 14-2, on Friday night.

Running back Dion Willis scored on a 40-yard run for the Colts to give them the lead before receiver Brent Scott scored on an 69-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to put the game away. A goal line interception by Dwan Gill late in the game killed the Monarchs’ hopes of finding the end zone.

‘We don’t have a whole lot of players, so we have to play disciplined, hard and we can’t afford to get hurt,’ Carson Coach Michael Christensen said. ‘I was really proud of how we played. It’s nice to win, but we’ve got our whole season still ahead of us.’
