After the opening weekend of football, here are some observations:

Anaheim Servite and Los Angeles Crenshaw should be ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in Southern California.

The City Section deserves props for Crenshaw over Lakewood, Carson over Santa Ana Mater Dei, Woodland Hills El Camino Real over Newhall Hart, Westchester over Pasadena, L.A. Roosevelt over Alhambra and the fact that Gardena almost stunned Covina Charter Oak, 15-14.

Malcolm Jones of Westlake Village Oaks Christian is a man among boys. How in the name of cramps did he make it through his team’s win over Mission Hills Alemany while staying in the game most of the way despite playing defense and carrying the ball 37 times for 274 yards?

The field-goal kickers are key. Garfield won on a last-second field goal. Lancaster Paraclete’s Kyle Steffes had field goals of 50 and 48 yards, along with punts of 49 and 43 yards.

Lakewood quarterback Jesse Scroggins is definitely USC caliber. He has great poise and confidence in the pocket. The Lancers have a team that can go far in the Pac-5 playoffs.

Crenshaw receiver Geno Hall was fabulous.

Westlake Village Westlake’s Nelson Spruce, a junior receiver, caught five passes for 233 yards and four TDs against Paso Robles.

Crenshaw is headed for a 14-0 season if it can get past Norco next week.
