The counting is going on with one month to go before there’s a vote on whether to put Westlake Village Oaks Christian, Ventura St. Bonaventure, Simi Valley Grace Brethren and Oxnard Santa Clara in a four-team league for football in 2010, and vote counters say it will be the Los Padres League that casts the decisive vote.

On Oct. 22, the nine leagues from the Northern area get to vote at the Southern Section Council meeting, and several athletic administrators say it’s 4-4, with the Los Padres League the tiebreaker.

Ken Fredrickson, the athletic director at Santa Ynez and the Los Padres representative, said his league won’t get together to make a decision until the day before the council meeting. But the Los Padres League voted for the four-team league in a previous ballot.

‘I think everyone is hoping CIF will step in and do something, but they won’t,’ Fredrickson said.

If the four-team league is voted in, then the four schools are expected to appeal directly to the Southern Section Council made up of 85 leagues.

And if all else fails for the four private schools, there’s always the opportunity for a parent to take the case to court.
