After losing to Woodland Hills El Camino Real, 33-28, in the season opener, Newhall Hart seemed headed for a season to forget, with some wondering if the Indians were in decline after winning six Southern Section championships under Coach Mike Herrington.

Hold off on those demise stories.

‘The season is young,’ Herrington said. ‘It still could happen.’

But the Indians have rebounded with victories over Palmdale and Righetti going into a tough game Friday against unbeaten Westlake Village Westlake at College of the Canyons.

Herrington is serving as the team’s offensive coordinator for the first time, and he has been the head coach since 1989.

‘It’s kind of refreshing me as far as my coaching,’ he said.

It’s good news for the defense. He has no time to yell at them while being worried about the offense.

The Indians are averaging more than 400 yards a game in total offense, and they’ll probably need 400 yards to come close to a high-powered Westlake team.
