First there was Lakewood beating Long Beach Poly, ending an 80-game Moore League win streak. On Friday night, Long Beach Millikan defeated Poly, 35-34, in double overtime, giving the Rams their first win over Poly since 1985.

The standout player for Millikan was backup quarterback Alden Darby, who completed 10 of 13 passes for 137 yards and four touchdowns.

Most stunning, though, was how Poly beat itself. The Jackrabbits had four interceptions, lost two fumbles, had a punt blocked and committed 22 penalties. In the final three minutes, with the chance to take the lead on an extra point, Poly was called for excessive celebration after a touchdown, and the conversion kick was blocked.

Poly is 1-2 in league. I still think the Jackrabbits will find a way to qualify for the Pac-5 Division playoffs, but the mistakes have to stop.

Other streakbusters Friday: Dana Hills defeated San Clemente for the first time since 1991. St. Francis defeated Loyola for the first time since 1982. And La Mirada ended Lakewood Mayfair’s 52-game Suburban League win streak.
