Boys’ basketball: Compton edges Harvard-Westlake

There was a terrific quarterfinal game of the Redondo tournament Wednesday, and Compton emerged with a 70-69 victory over North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake when Nate Bulluck missed two free throws with one second left.

It was a tough loss for the Wolverines (1-1), who played physical and handled Compton’s pressure defense for much of the game. Erik Swoope had 18 points and Bulluck 15.

Compton (2-0) received 28 points from Allan Guei, 19 points from Cliff Sims and 16 from Anthony January. Compton scored all 16 of its points in the fourth quarter on free throws.

Melvin Lewis gave Compton a one-point lead by making a free throw with six seconds left. The Wolverines (1-1) came back and Bulluck was fouled going to the basket. But neither free throw was close to going in.

In another quarterfinal, Long Beach Poly defeated Palisades, 61-49. Shelton Boykin scored 17 points.
