Football: It’s a friendly rivalry for Edison’s Gane

When Servite advanced to the playoffs last season and Edison didn’t after losing out on the infamous ‘hat finish’ in the Sunset League, the Friars had a special supporter watching in the first round against Lakewood: Edison two-way lineman Luke Gane.

Gane had been sidelined during the entire 2008 season after being diagnosed with a rare blood disorder, and he was so taken by the Friars’ friendship during his ordeal that he decided to root for them during their playoff run. Servite had shown up at an event in which players and friends had their hair cut to show support for Gane, and the Friars presented him with a signed poster.

So when Edison plays Servite in the Pac-5 Division title game on Saturday at Angel Stadium, there will be plenty of mutual respect among players. Edison defeated Servite, 23-9, in September, with Gane playing a big role for the Chargers.

‘It’s an honor being able to play this team twice,’ Gane said. ‘It is very unique and ironic. I am happy they made it this far as a friend outside of football.’
