It’s less than two hours before the opening kickoff for the City Section Division I championship game at the Coliseum, and Narbonne has arrived, walking down the red-marked steps on the torch side of the stadium. They stood together at the 50-yard line listening to a talk from Coach Manuel Douglas.

If there ever has been a bigger underdog in a City final, I can’t remember. The Gauchos’ opponent, Crenshaw, is 13-0 and hasn’t been challenged in the playoffs.

It has stopped raining for the moment. The field looks a little battered, but the USC-painted end zones are still visible, and let’s hope some fans show up because the City Section needs the ticket revenue in this time of budget cuts.

A Crenshaw win should get the Cougars a CIF state championship bowl berth. But they don’t just want to win. They’re trying to show how good they are and bring respect to the City Section. Narbonne, however, has nothing to lose and will come out eager to show it can compete.

Game time is 1 p.m. Ben Bolch will be live blogging from the game, and I might add my thoughts too.
