Girls’ basketball: Hillcrest Christian 20, St. Bernard 18

St. Bernard outscored Hillcrest Christian 13-8 in the second quarter but still trails 20-18 at halftime of this afternoon’s Southern Section Division 6AA final at Colony High.

Despite missing 9 of 19 free throw attempts and shooting a dismal 4 for 39 from the floor (10.3%), the top-seeded Vikings got back into the game by out-rebounding Hillcrest Christian 34-20. Angelica Laury has 9 points and Gabrielle Adoh has 7, but top scorer Destini French is 0 for 7 and Taylor Heath is 1 of 10 and has three personal fouls for St. Bernard.

Brittany Espinoza leads the Eagles with 6 points and Christy Corcoran has 5 and Natalie Bodle has 4, but Lauren Alas and Bodle both have three fouls for Hillcrest Christian, which led by as many as 8 points and has never trailed.
