Girls’ basketball: Santa Margarita wins the Division 3A title

Senior guard Melissa Zornig put on a layup clinic tonight, scoring a game-high 19 points, and Elise Lorenz added 14 to lift top-seeded Santa Margarita (24-6) to a 52-39 win over third-seeded Muir (21-8) in the Southern Section Division 3A championship tonight at Santa Ana Mater Dei.

Jermani Daniels led Muir with 10 points and Ashia Owens and Taylor Gomez contributed eight apiece.

Santa Margarita was seven for eight from the free throw line and had 11 steals.

This is Santa Margarita’s first championship appearance since winning the Division 3AA title in 2005, and Muir’s first time competing in a championship game since 2004.
