Girls’ basketball: Canyon Springs gets the win

Tear’a Laudermill scored 22 points and Amber Smith and Sophia Ederaine added 17 apiece to lead Canyon Springs to a 72-62 win over Etiwanda in the first round of the Southern California Regional Division I playoffs Tuesday at Canyon Springs High.

Canyon Springs led 40-26 at halftime, then the Cougars started throwing the ball away under Etiwanda’s pressure defense and physical style of play.

Etiwanda whittled away at the Cougars lead to trail 56-52 at the beginning of the fourth. Canyon Springs then started pressing, and forced multiple turnovers to regain control of the game.

The Cougars were 15 for 23 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

Natalia Hawthorne led Etiwanda with 20 points, and Jada Blackwell had 19.
