Boys’ basketball: Mater Dei closes first quarter strong

Mater Dei scored six of the final eight points of the first quarter and trails Taft, 25-24, heading into the second quarter of a Southern California Division I regional semifinal at Mater Dei.

The Monarchs rallied with three consecutive layups, including a scoop layup by Keala King, a reverse layup by Tyler Lamb and another layup by Gary Franklin Jr. Lamb finished the first quarter with 12 points.

Pierson Williams has 13 points for Taft.
