Let me say after seeing Santa Ana Mater Dei get routed by Corona Santiago in the season opener when Monarch pitchers gave up 17 runs and six home runs, I concluded it was going to be a long season for the Monarchs.

Then Coach Burt Call turned Arizona State-bound center fielder Cory Hahn into a pitcher. And look what happened on Friday night in a Trinity League opener. It was Mater Dei 7, Orange Lutheran 0. That’s unbelievable, but not really, because Hahn has a great arm and he threw six shutout innings to beat the Lancers (6-2), who only last week knocked off La Puente Bishop Amat to win a bracket of the Newport Elks tournament.

Whether Mater Dei (3-3) has enough pitching depth to win the Trinity remains in question, but with Hahn on the mound, the opponents will be facing a formidable obstacle.
