The best start in UCLA history is this season’s 17-0 run, and lots of former local high school standouts have been keying the Bruins’ start.
Freshman third baseman Cody Regis from Glendora leads the team with a .448 batting average. He hit .355 as a senior at Glendora. The second-best hitter is sophomore second baseman Tyler Rahmattula from Santa Ana Mater Dei, who’s batting .431. Senior outfielder Blair Dunlap from Santa Margarita has a 12-game hitting streak.
And then there are the starting pitchers. Garett Claypool from Woodland Hills El Camino Real is 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA. Gerrit Cole from Orange Lutheran is 5-0 with a 2.20 ERA. Trevor Bauer from Newhall Hart is 4-0 with a 2.05 ERA. And Rob Rasmussen from Pasadena Poly is 2-0 with a 2.52 ERA. Closer Dan Klein from Anaheim Servite has three saves and has yet to give up a run in 11 appearances over 13 innings.
You have to give Coach John Savage credit for his recruiting of the Southern California baseball scene.
