Junior pitcher Kenny Mathews of Diamond Bar is earning his way into elite status. He improved to 5-0 on Friday, pitching his team past Chino Hills, 7-2, and into first place in the Sierra League.

The 6-foot-3 Mathews beat La Palm Kennedy, 1-0, in the season opener. He outdueled UCLA-bound Adam Plutko of Glendora, 1-0, on March 19. He struck out 14 against Chino on March 26.

He has thrust himself into the upper echelon of top pitchers that include Henry Owens of Huntington Beach Edison, Cody Buckel of Simi Valley Royal, TJ Kendzora of Lake Forest El Toro and Dylan Covey of Pasadena Maranatha.
