West Covina’s Beejay Lee is used to being the underdog, quite literally.

He’s 5-foot-6.

But as he stood at the start line on Saturday at the Mount Sac Relays, he said to himself, ‘I dont want anyone taller than me to beat me.’

He proceeded to win the 100-meter-dash in 10.61, tying Granada’s George Atkinson for the fastest time in the state. Before the race, he was ranked No. 9 in California with a time of 10.74.

‘I never had height, but I have heart,’ Lee said.
