Baseball: Taft wins its division in Redondo tourney

Matt Smith threw 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and Jordan Berger delivered a three-run double during a five-run sixth inning to lift Woodland Hills Taft past South Torrance, 9-1, in the championship game of a division of the Redondo tournament.

Taft (15-9), tied for third place in the West Valley League, plays well when it doesn’t make errors, and the Toreadors were able to play catch Saturday. Alex Sawelson hit a home run during the sixth-inning outburst.

Chatsworth (21-3) defeated Santa Barbara, 14-3, in five innings in the Chatsworth tournament. Steve Karkenny had two doubles and two RBIs. Aaron Brown hit a home run, triple and double. Sean O’Connell and Ryan Escobar added two hits apiece.

In the Redondo tournament, La Mirada (17-8) defeated Moorpark, 11-2. Mitch Petersen threw six scoreless innings for La Mirada. Chaminade (21-4) continued its winning ways with a 5-4 win over Corona Centennial. Brando Tessar hit a two-run home run and Mathew Troupe drove in the game-winning run.

Westlake defeated West Torrance, 8-4. Christian Yelich hit his seventh home run. El Segundo defeated Harvard-Westlake, 5-4.

In the Trinity League, Bellflower St. John Bosco defeated Santa Margarita, 14-7. Manny De La Rosa had four hits.
