In the Southern Section Division 1 volleyball quarterfinals Saturday night, defending champion Los Angeles Loyola trailed Newport Harbor, 14-11, in a game five. All Newport Harbor needed was a single side out to win.

But the Cubs, with Steve Irvin serving, scored five consecutive points to win the match and advance to a Tuesday night semifinal at Corona del Mar.

‘We did something virtually impossible,’ Coach Mike Boehle said.

But Irvin’s serves, combined with some good digs, bailed out Loyola, which hasn’t exactly had a banner season after dominating last year. But this performance will be hard to top.’The kids never let up,’ Boehle said.

Newport Harbor, led by junior Cody Caldwell, had the Cubs on the brink of defeat.

‘Any time you go down to the Orange County environment, it’s hard,’ Boehle said.
