Samuel Johnson, the father of 6-foot-6 sophomore basketball player Xavier Johnson of Temecula Chaparral, said Tuesday his family hasn’t made a final decision whether to leave the school but is weighing its options.

Johnson said he has been concerned about school budget cuts. He also commutes to his work in San Diego and is examining whether to make a change in his commute from Temecula.

He also added that basketball exposure is not a concern, since his son already has several scholarship offers.

‘My family is big on academics,’ he said. ‘It’s ingrained in my family.’

Coach Ed Coyle had indicated he was told Johnson would not be returning, and that still seems to be the likely scenario.
