The seven-on-seven summer passing season gets started this weekend a month ahead of schedule as football teams take advantage of the fact there are no longer any rules in the Southern Section barring schools from playing each other in the off season.

Crescenta Valley is hosting a tournament Friday afternoon that includes Newhall Hart and La Canada St. Francis and it switches to Glendale Saturday.

West Hills Chaminade is hosting a gathering Saturday at 9:30 a.m. that includes the Eagles, Encino Crespi, Westlake Village Westlake and Atascadero.

Considering that most schools have barely started spring practice, I don’t think there will be too much to watch.

As Chaminade Coach Ed Croson put it, ‘What we tell our kids is it’s a practice and the only way you win is if you learn something.’
