Birmingham pitcher Marti Sementelli is one of 32 players vying for selection to the USA Baseball Women’s National Team, which will compete later this year in Venezuela in the International Baseball Federation’s fourth World Cup of Women’s Baseball.

Other locals attempting to make the team are Laura Espinoza-Watson, an infielder from Wilmington; Nichole Holt, an infielder from Camarillo; Ghazaleh Sailors, an infielder and pitcher from Santa Barbara; and Sarah Gascon, an infielder from Rancho Palos Verdes. The roster will be whittled to 18 during tryouts held through Thursday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.
