L.A. Cathedral’s best player last season was two-way starter Anthony Jefferson, now at UCLA. Senior receiver-cornerback Joel Porchia is being counted on this season to replace Jefferson in the impact role.

I stopped by Cathedral Thursday to watch practice, and Porchia sure knows how to catch passes. He should form an outstanding duo with 6-foot-3 sophomore quarterback Hayden Rettig, who has a strong arm but will be tested for lack of experience when he has to face tough Mission League foes Gardena Serra, La Canada St. Francis and West Hills Chaminade.

Porchia, though, should have no trouble competing against the best. He looks like he has the toughness and skills to excel.

It remains to be seen how successful Cathedral will be this season once league play begins. The Phantoms have lots of promising young players, such as freshman receiver Jeff Farrar and sophomore defensive back Zachary Green, a transfer from Westlake Village Oaks Christian.

Lots will depend on Rettig’s development.
