Football: Crenshaw makes changes and team is rolling

Los Angeles Crenshaw is starting to look like the team of 2009 that was unbeatable in City Section action, and the big reason is a change in personnel.
Junior Jerry McConico has taken over at quarterback, moving Marquis Thompson to receiver, a position that was lacking a big-play weapon after the graduation of Geno Hall. And what a difference Thompson has made.
‘He’s catching the ball and making the plays,’ Coach Robert Garrett said.
Since opening the season with two close losses, Crenshaw (3-2) has outscored its last three opponents, 146-10.
‘Right now, they’re as good, if not better, than last season,’ said TV broadcaster Randy Rosenbloom.
McConico, last season’s freshman-sophomore quarterback, adds a passing game to Crenshaw’s offense.
‘He’s understanding the offense,’ Garrett said. ‘He brings a different dimension, which gives Marquis the opportunity to show how versatile he is.’
And the arrival of Taft transfer Shaquille Shelton at running back and defensive back has increased Crenshaw’s depth.
It all means that the Cougars are back in their role as a heavy favorite to win the City Division I title.
