Talk about depth.

Even though four players will miss at least the beginning of the basketball season due to anterior cruciate ligament injuries, St. Bernard is still expected to be one of the top teams in Southern California.

That’s because the Vikings have UCLA-bound senior Kacy Swain, a 6-foot-3 transfer from Chaparral High, and a highly talented group of freshmen including LaJahna Drummer (6-2), Michelle Curry (6-0), Chyanne Butler (5-2) and Demoria White (5-3).

‘We could be starting two, three or four of them,’ Coach Bo Corona said of the freshman.

For a while, at least.

Two of the team’s top returnees from last year’s Southern Section Division 6AA championship team, senior Destini French and sophomore Angelica Laury, are quickly recovering from their knee injuries and are expected to return to the court soon.

‘We got hit with them like a flu bug,’ Corona said of his team’s torn-ACL epidemic.

But a little bad luck has not discouraged him from entering the team in a prestigious tournament at the HAX on Nov. 13-14, where he hopes to challenge Division I schools like Long Beach Poly.

‘We’ve got less than 350 kids and we’re playing schools with over 2,000 kids,’ Corona said. ‘I don’t mind.’
