Having finished runner-up last year, North Hollywood was determined to make the most of its opportunity at Monday afternoon’s City Section girls’ golf championships.

The Huskies did precisely that, shooting a total of 435 to upset defending champion Van Nuys by 14 shots for their first girls’ golf title since Coach Steve Miller started the program 10 years ago.

‘The girls all worked really hard since the summer and I’m really proud of them,’ Miller said. ‘Sometimes in this game hard work doesn’t get you results but this time it did.’

North Hollywood lost by three strokes to Van Nuys last year and lost to the Wolves by a single stroke, 449-450, in last week’s Valley 1A League finals--making Monday’s triumph that much more satisfying.

Oregon-bound senior Monica Petchakan, the Huskies’ top player, was trying to win her third Individual crown. Despite an even-par 73, she finished second by three strokes to Van Nuys’ Jann Vongchaisaree.

Catherine Schlesinger shot an 81 and our fifth girl Sara Simon shot a 90 which gave us good consistent scoring and probably made the difference,’ Miller said.

Granada Hills (497) finished third, Venice (521) was fourth and Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies (589) was fifth.

North Hollywood and Van Nuys move on to next Wednesday’s Southern California Regional Championships in Murrieta.
