Football: The Harry Welch effect at Santa Margarita

When you guide two different schools to state bowl victories, that’s impressive. But what Harry Welch has already accomplished at Santa Margarita in his first season as coach might be even more startling.

Welch has Santa Margarita at 8-2, finished second in the Trinity League, and now the Eagles have their eye on disrupting teams in the Pac-5 Division playoffs. First up is Huntington Beach Edison.

Welch also has been dealing with trying to recover from prostate cancer but he looks good and continues to inspire everyone around him.

I caught up with him on Sunday at the Southern Section office and asked him about Santa Margarita’s quick turnaround.
