Trailing by one point with 18 seconds left, Fontana Summit set up an out-of-bounds play. But Dorian Cason’s inbound pass sailed over the head of the intended target in the backcourt, Montigo Alford, and Mitty’s Brandon White picked up the ball and scored for an uncontested layup, and Mitty secured a 53-50 victory in the state Division II championship game.

Cason had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Summit (28-8), which rallied in the second half to give Mitty (32-2) a big scare.

It was a terrific fourth quarter. Mitty was desperately trying to hang on after Aaron Gordon picked up his fourth foul with 4:24 left and was sent to the bench. Cason, a 6-8 senior, started going inside, drawing fouls and rallying the Summit.

Gordon finished with 17 points and 21 rebounds.
