Baseball: Mission League goes 4-0 in Division 2 openers

Top-seeded Cypress was upset by Goleta Dos Pueblos, 5-4, and the Mission League went 4-0 to highlight the opening round of Southern Section Division 2 playoff action.
Mission League champion North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake received a dominating pitching performance from junior Lucas Giolito to defeat Placentia Valencia, 5-0. Giolito struck out eight, walked one and allowed three hits in six innings. Jason Garfinkel contributed a two-run double, and Jack Flaherty had a pair of bunt singles.
Mission Hills Alemany eliminated Suburban League champion La Mirada, 6-0, behind Cody Thompson, who threw a two-hitter. West Hills Chaminade defeated Palos Verdes, 13-5. Joe Moran had three hits. And Sherman Oaks Notre Dame defeated Crescenta Valley, 6-3. Sophomore Jack Morello threw six innings and Matt Lathuras got the save. Nick Huynh hit a two-run home run.
Mission Viejo advanced to a second-round game against Dos Pueblos by beating Vista del Lago, 6-4. Austin Saenz, the Cal State Fullerton-bound outfielder, picked up three more hits, giving him 49 on the season.
Santa Barbara scored 12 runs on 12 hits in the first inning to defeat Aliso Niguel, 13-3. Lucas Benenati had a three-run home run and Pepe Gil had a two-run double. Danny Zandona (9-1) threw a complete game. Yucaipa defeated West Torrance, 5-3. Buena defeated Canyon Springs, 3-2.
