Down, 5-0, L.A. Cathedral rallied to take a 6-5 lead over Hemet Tahquitz in a Southern Section Division 5 quarterfinal. Then the Phantoms fell behind, 8-6, going into the top of the seventh. What did Cathedral do on the road? The Phantoms scored 11 runs with none out and came away with a 17-8 victory.

‘This is the greatest win ever,’ Cathedral Coach Scott Pearson said.

Adding to the story line is that Cathedral won despite playing without a pair of three-year starters, Jaime Figueroa and Joe Gonzales, who were not allowed to play by Pearson because they chose to attend Grad Night on Thursday.

Freshmen Julian Perez and Michael Palos each had bases loaded triples in the seventh. Perez finished with four hits and five RBIs. Cathedral will play Lompoc in the semifinals.

Another Camino Real League team, Gardena Serra, knocked off Hemet, 6-2, and will play Oak Hills in the other semifinal.
