The City Section could be losing one of its most prominent basketball coaches. Bellflower St. John Bosco is supposed to name its new coach next week, and Woodland Hills Taft Coach Derrick Taylor met with St. John Bosco players and parents on Saturday at the Dominguez tournament.

Taylor’s name has been mentioned as the likely selection at St. John Bosco by several area coaches. But on Friday, in a text message responding to the rumors, Taylor said, ‘Don’t believe what you hear.’ Taylor has told his players he hasn’t made a final decision.

St. John Bosco Athletic Director Monty McDermott said in a text message on Saturday, ‘We have not hired anyone as our basketball coach at this time. We are hoping to have our head coach in place some time next week.’

Taylor built Taft into a basketball powerhouse, winning three City Section titles. A couple reasons why he might leave are that Taft is getting a new principal for the next school year, and Taylor has always been intrigued about what he could accomplish coaching at a private school.
